The adapter had the 3 AV cables, plus an S-video cable, which my TV also has an outlet for. Bought new cables same issue. Tried 3 tvs (2 hdtv's & 1 analog) using the red/white/yellow cord. http://imgur.com/9UjMF7A I have tried plugging the yellow cable into the yellow/green slot and it shows on the input selection screen on the TV that the AV input is active http://imgur.com/a9lYqg9 but here's what I tried first.

If you replace the N64 cable and the problem persists, you'll have to follow a guide available here to repair the connectors inside the N64. This means you are limited to certain areas of the board and there are some features you can't use.
all your tv does is recieve a signal and display it, it does not discriminate or choose not to display some things while displaying others. The reason games dont work is that the copper pins in the game tarnish due to humidity.
i would say that if you get no sound that the 64 is fried.good luck! I got a 64 from Craigslist and it wasnt working. I'm not sure what is happening since it worked for you. Any help would be appreciated!
